Darien's Halloween Peaks Before the 31st. Here's the Week, Day by Day.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Darien's organized Halloween programming runs from Thursday, October 22, through Friday, October 30, with one daytime exception on the 31st, spread across the Darien Y, Darien EMS–Post 53, Darien Library, the Darien Nature Center, the Darien Community Association and the Mather Homestead. On the Darien Chamber of Commerce's October calendar, October 31 has no listings at all. The one Halloween-day event below appears on a separate listing.

Of the nine events, eight finish before the 31st. They also skip around the clock. Some run in the morning, some after school, some on weekend afternoons and some in the early evening. Mapping each one to the child it's designed for makes the spread much easier to use.

Each event is aimed at a different age

Look past the shared pumpkins and costumes and the week sorts by age, from toddlers up to kids who want a real scare.

The youngest crowd gets weekday mornings. Halloween Storytime at Darien Library on Wednesday, October 28, is for ages 1 to 5. It runs half an hour of Halloween songs, rhymes and fingerplays, followed by trick-or-treating on the library's first floor. Costumes are encouraged and you don't need to register. Two days later, the DCA's Not-So-Spooky Stroll covers the same age group outdoors. It winds through the Bird Sanctuary and Nature Trail behind the Darien Community Association with costume-friendly Halloween surprises along the way, and Darien Library storytimes take place in the tree-stump classroom.

Elementary schoolers get the craft sessions. The Darien Arts Center workshop at NAYA on Thursday, October 22, is open to preschool through fifth grade. Kids decorate pumpkins with stickers, found objects, gems, markers and paint pens, according to the Darien Chamber's community calendar. The Darien Nature Center's version on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons is for all ages with a caregiver. Pumpkins are decorated with natural materials, and the sessions add a scavenger hunt, s'mores and animal costume photos. These are among the first public programs since the Nature Center opened its reimagined Animal Room at a free community event on October 17.

Older kids get the evening and the scares. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a Darien Library program held at the Museum of Darien on Tuesday evening. It's for ages 6 and up with a caregiver, every attendee has to register, and the library asks guests to dress warmly because the stories are told outdoors under the moon. The Post 53 haunted house covers the widest age range of the week. As Patch reported, it offers three levels of fright, from little ones up to kids looking for a good scare, along with pumpkin decorating, face painting, a bake sale and ambulance tours.

Whole families get the weekend anchors. Halloween at Darien Y on Friday night is the Y's annual free event. It includes a costume parade, a bouncy house and a photo booth, and every room in the building gets a Halloween makeover. The Mather Homestead's Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday is more harvest than Halloween. It offers pony and hay rides, face painting, crafts, treats, live music and pumpkins, plus ride-on farm equipment that is new this year.

What the prices actually buy

Ticket prices vary across the week, and the gap depends mostly on how each event charges. Some charge per child, some per family and some per person.

  • Free: Halloween at Darien Y, the DCA stroll and the MakeInspires bash on the 31st.
  • Per child: Post 53 charges $10 per child, so two kids cost $20. All proceeds go to Darien EMS–Post 53, the town's volunteer EMS organization, which is staffed by state-certified Darien High School student EMTs and adult EMT advisors.
  • Per family: The Nature Center charges $35 for a member family and $45 for a nonmember family, however many kids come.
  • Per person: The Mather festival charges $20 per adult and $15 per child, and children under one get in free. Two adults and two children come to $70.
  • Listed price: The Darien Arts Center workshop is listed at $45.

A nonmember family at the Nature Center pays the same $45 listed for the Arts Center workshop. The cheapest ticketed event of the week is also the one whose proceeds fund a local emergency service run largely by high schoolers.

The stroll that moved up a day

The DCA's Not-So-Spooky Stroll is a returning tradition, but it has a new date. Last year Patch listed it as a free 10 a.m. event on Friday, October 31, 2025, which was Halloween itself. This year it's on Friday, October 30, again from 10 a.m. to noon.

The stroll keeps its Friday-morning slot, and the calendar has moved around it. In 2025, Halloween fell on a weekday and the stroll ran that morning. In 2026, Halloween falls on a Saturday, and the stroll still happens on a weekday, the day before. If your preschooler went on the 31st last year, a habit-based plan will miss it by a day.

Saturday the 31st has one listing

Halloween day itself has a single organized event, and it's on Post Road. MakeInspires and The Octagon Cafe are hosting a free, family-friendly Halloween Bash from noon to 2 p.m. at 1897 Post Road. Kids can drop in anytime for hands-on STEAM challenges, Battle Bots and Halloween catapults. The Octagon Cafe will sell apple cider, hot chocolate, Rice Krispie treats and other seasonal refreshments. Costumes are welcome and RSVPs are encouraged.

The event wraps up by 2 p.m., which leaves the rest of Saturday open. Halloween evening has no organized event on the calendar, so the night itself is left to the neighborhoods.

What to book ahead

Some of these events fill up and some don't need a reservation, so here's the order to handle them:

  1. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Tuesday, October 27. Every attendee has to register, including caregivers. Book through the Darien Library event page, where registration closes at 3 p.m. that day. The Museum of Darien's listing still shows the fee as to be announced.
  2. Mather Homestead Fall Harvest Festival, Saturday, October 24. Tickets are on the festival page.
  3. Darien Nature Center Pumpkin Decorating, October 27 or 28. Choose an afternoon on the program page. Member and nonmember family rates are different.
  4. Post 53 Haunted House, Sunday, October 25. Tickets are available online or at the door, so this one can be a last-minute decision.
  5. MakeInspires Halloween Bash, Saturday, October 31. It's free, but RSVPs are encouraged on the Sawyer listing.
  6. No booking needed: Halloween at Darien Y on Friday the 23rd, Halloween Storytime on Wednesday the 28th and the DCA stroll on Friday the 30th. Just show up in costume.

If you only keep one date in mind, make it the 30th. That Friday is the last chance to catch a Darien Halloween event that's free, outdoors and designed for small children.
